(NEW BIOGRAPHY COMING SOON)
The Savage Jazz formed in
early 2006 thanks to a great deal of good luck and a common
desire on the part of each member of the band to start
doing something seriously special - fitting with both
personal musical interests and meeting the wider goal of
forming a remarkable and distinct musical identity. The
Savage Jazz are:
Giles Bennett - Vocality & Guitarilicious
Alex Glover - Backing Vocals & Guitar Sex
Tom Cattermole - Backing Vocals & Bass In Ya Face
Richard Homer - The Drum Dragoon
The Savage Jazz draw on a wide array of musical styles - a
sound full of hooks yet constantly unpredictable. A true
genre-bridging band, The Savage Jazz heap together elements
of Reggae, Blues, Latin, Jazz, Funk, Indie and World music,
and emerge with a rare and incomparable mix.
The Savage Jazz met in two halfs. Rich and Giles met by
fate in Exeter. Literally. On the outlook for a
percussionist/drummer to jam with her boyfriend, Giles'
girlfriend - while working in the Uni bar - asked Rich, on
a hunch, (while he enjoyed a whisky) whether he was at all
musical. Conversation progressed and Rich's affinity with
things you can bang or hit came to light. An introduction
and a couple of jam's later a musical understanding had
begun to flourish. Later, pursuing his musical aspirations,
Giles moved to Guildford (henceforth called G-Town) to
study and had the good fortune of meeting Alex and Brown.
Without wanting to get ahead of ourselves, it's fair to say
that the Alex/Giles partnership is a pretty seriously
fruitful affair, two different yet equally awesome
guitarists making together something even greater than the
sum of its parts. Likewise, an instant synergy developed in
the bands rhythm section - Tom & Rich ensuring that The
Savage Jazz are provided with an abundance of unashamedly
naughty little grooves.
One of the most striking features of The Jazz is that each
member brings such varied influences to the mix. It would
be obscene to list all the artists and bands that have
impacted on The Savage Jazz, but they are variously
compared to, and cite as influences (among many others):
Jack Johnson, Dispatch, The Kooks, Nitin Sawhney, The Red
Hot Chili Peppers, Xavier Rudd, Damien Rice, Pete Murray
and Gomez.
The Savage Jazz are currently planning to record their
first full album early next year and alongside recently
written material such as Wax and End Of The Song, a glut of
good songs are in the creative pipeline.
